What is idling? PDF Print E-mail

idlingIdling is about much more than laziness. Many idlers are extremely lazy, others are not - what we have in common is the refusal to work hard at mundane tasks when we could be living our lives to the full.

The Idle Manifesto suggests some possible definitions:

  • Doing nothing for a period of time.
  • Insisting on involvement in creative activities rather than in mundane tasks.
  • Permanently 'dropping out' of mainstream society.
  • Only doing work which is enjoyable.
  • Working part-time, or job sharing.
  • Being self employed and working from home.
  • Forming 'intentional communities' of individuals with common goals and interests.
  • Living in such a way that work is secondary to leisure.

idling is living one's own life as one sees fit rather than living someone else's idea if life.
