he doesnt exactly say "work really hard in the afternoon" at all..thats how he may sometime work.

He is arguing against the protestant work ethic and regaining 'work' as something we do and can enjoy, when it is under 'our control'

i think he says more importantly that even when we stare at the ceiling we are doing something..its about 'creativity' instead of simply 'busyness' or 'work busyness'

i think its also about the use of words and language.

i believe we must regain and resuse language to be biased towards idleness, and subsequently alter thinking...because essentially, language has been "energised" towards work...we shoudl "energise" towards idleness. Its that simple.

There is actually a theory about this, that surprisingly is called " Idle Theory" ;~)
It basically states the following:

"Central to Idle Theory is a physical understanding of life as alternating between two states: busy and idle. While busy, a living creature works to maintain itself. While idle, it is either inactive or engaged in some non-maintenance activity. Depending upon their physical constitution and the environment in which they find themselves, all living creatures operate somewhere on a scale which extends from being nearly continuously busy at one extreme, to being nearly continuously idle at the other extreme. That is, some creatures must work very hard to stay alive, and others hardly at all. Those creatures which, even working continuously, are unable to maintain themselves, disintegrate and die."

Here is a link to the whole thing, enjoy and post back any thoughts.

Yes, as Belly says that was a pretty major misrepresentation of what Tom says, Jase

He's talking about his own style of working and how that does not fit into what employers expect. Also some more general comments about idling.

Boy, Tom has been busy hasnt he? Haven't been to Tom's site in quite a while and there are indeedy quite of things to buy. I like the look of the collection of essays but £18.99 is a bit steep for me (not necesserily saying there not worth it, just that i havent got 19 quid )
Are you the sort of person who touches base in an armitage shanks defecation scenario or do you simply take a shit ?

I've bought it. First thing I've ever bought from the Idler Empire, but it's just beautifully presented and bound and full of good writers and looked excellent value for 19 quid generally..

Though I think it was cheaper then that on amazon actually.

I actually considered buying two copies so I could keep one mint...
People are worried that there could come a time when these activists actually take action.
